Wellness: prevention and early detectionMedavie Blue Cross has become the first insurer in Canada to offer comprehensive gut health testing by partnering with Nucliq Biologics, a biotech company specializing in microbiome science. The partnership introduces a gut health program combining registered dietitian consultations with Nucliq's Gutcheck or Gutcheck VIVO microbiome test kits, available to eligible plan members through Medavie's Connected Care digital health services platform. Gutcheck analyzes the balance of bacteria in the gut and provides personalized reports with actionable nutrition and probiotic recommendations. Gutcheck VIVO offers the same comprehensive assessment with additional insights tailored specifically for women's health, including hormonal regulation, skin health, and bone health.
Manulife in Canada has become the first insurance company to offer access to GRAIL’s Galleri multi-cancer early detection test. The test can detect more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear and will be provided through Medcan, the official Canadian provider of Galleri. Eligible members aged 50 and older can access the test at a reduced cost through the Manulife Vitality Plus program. Manulife first partnered with GRAIL in 2022 through its US division, John Hancock, where the Galleri test is available to eligible life insurance customers.
Also in Canada, Desjardins Insurance has partnered with OncoHelix, a precision diagnostics laboratory, to expand access to advanced cancer biomarker testing through its Cancer Care Focus initiative. Eligible group insurance members and their dependents can access OncoHelix’s cancer testing portfolio, including comprehensive genomic profiling and liquid biopsy, with a 10% discount. These diagnostic tests help identify tumor‑driving mutations and match patients with targeted therapies or clinical trials, enabling earlier and more personalized treatment decisions.

Critical illness benefitsIn Japan, Lifenet launched a new 10-year term cancer insurance product. A key distinguishing feature is the premium waiver during the waiting period, where customers do not have to pay premiums during the 90-day waiting period before cancer benefits become active.
In the US, Securian Financial has expanded its group CI insurance to include a suite of reproductive health benefits. The enhancements add lump-sum benefit eligibility for conditions and services, such as premature menopause, egg and sperm harvesting, abnormalities of the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries, broader disorders of male and female reproductive organs, and viral or bacterial reproductive infections. Employers can offer this coverage as a voluntary benefit.
In New Zealand, AIA introduced an affordable CI product that covers severe conditions like major cancers, heart attacks, and strokes. By limiting coverage to fewer conditions and applying similar or stricter severity thresholds compared to other comprehensive critical illness products, premiums are 60%–70% lower for most customers, with smaller discounts at older ages. This offering can be an attractive option for cost-conscious customers, including younger consumers entering the insurance market, or older policyholders who may be considering reducing or lapsing their comprehensive CI coverage due to affordability issues. This launch follows the launch of a similar CI product by Chubb in the same market, as noted in our 2025 Q2 report.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, life and health insurers worldwide launched a wide range of products featuring death and living benefits, as well as medical insurance coverage, in all three major regions: Americas, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). New offerings included pure protection coverage and insurance products – such as whole life, universal life, and unit-linked insurance – that combine protection with a cash value or investment component.
We observed several notable developments, including the launch of innovative long-term care (LTC) benefits. This includes a hybrid annuity LTC product, a dementia-only coverage product, and a voluntary life insurance product with accelerated long-term care benefits and a death benefit reset feature. There were also interesting critical illness (CI) product launches, such as a cancer-only CI plan with a premium waiver during the waiting period, group CI plans with reproductive health benefits, and a CI product that covers fewer conditions and has higher severity thresholds. Insurers also continued to digitize permanent life products and enhance wellness programs by offering multi-cancer early detection and gut microbiome tests as well as genomic profiling for cancer patients.LTC benefits
In the US, Nationwide introduced CareMatters Annuity, a single premium fixed deferred annuity with an integrated LTC rider. When LTC benefits are triggered, payments initially draw from the contract’s cash value, followed by an LTC benefit pool that is typically two to three times the initial premium. The product provides cash indemnity benefits if the insured has a severe cognitive impairment or cannot perform two of six Activities of Daily Living (ADL) for at least 90 days. Upon the policyholder’s death, beneficiaries receive any remaining annuity value, reduced by prior LTC benefits and withdrawals.
Chubb launched a new group voluntary life benefit that can be accelerated to help cover long-term care expenses, with benefits paying up to 300% of the death benefit for professional care or care from family and friends. Even if the full death benefit is used to cover care costs, the policy restores the death benefit for beneficiaries. The product comes with value-added services such as concierge caregiving support through HomeThrive (a healthcare service company), respite care benefits providing temporary relief to primary caregivers through short-term substitute care, as well as guidance, hands-on assistance, emotional support, and financial help for family caregivers.
In Hong Kong, Chubb introduced Side by Side Dementia, the market’s first standalone policy dedicated to supporting individuals with dementia and their caregivers. The plan covers moderate and severe dementia, with payout levels based on severity. For severe dementia, customers can choose a lump sum payment or monthly installments over five or 10 years to meet care needs. It also provides ongoing support with monthly payouts of 1% of the sum assured for up to 15 years, one year after the severe dementia benefit is paid. Additional features include caregiver counseling reimbursement (up to US$125 per visit for 15 visits per policy) and the Step by Step Care service that offers case management, cognitive assessments, therapy, and cognitive and physical activity training. If no dementia claim is made before the policyholder passes away, beneficiaries receive 105% of total basic premiums paid. Applications require only one health question and no medical underwriting.
Life insurance coverage gaps affecting hundreds of millions globally present significant opportunities for insurers to develop innovative, inclusive solutions that reach underserved customers and meet their needs.

Digitized permanent life insurance
Transamerica has partnered with insurtech Bestow to launch an indexed universal life (IUL) product that delivers a fully digital experience for advisors and customers. The solution features a streamlined application process with responsive health and lifestyle questions, and instant underwriting decisions. The launch of the IUL product builds on the success of Transamerica’s Final Expense offering introduced in 2024, which features 100% instant-decision underwriting. This launch reflects the growing trend of digitization in permanent life insurance in the US and Canada, following recent universal life and whole life insurance offerings from Amplify, Foresters Financial, and Afficiency, as well as Goose Insurance and Assumption Life, as discussed in our 2025 Q2 and 2025 Q3 reports.
Targeting underinsured populationsIn the US, Wysh, a digital life insurer specializing in embedded life coverage, partnered with Beem, a fintech that offers a smart wallet and helps clients build their credit history, to integrate life insurance into Beem’s subscription plans. Members of Beem’s Life Plus and Life Pro tiers receive up to $1,000 in automatic life insurance benefits without a separate application or medical exam. The coverage amount is determined by the subscription level of members. This collaboration aims to make micro-life insurance accessible to underserved populations by eliminating traditional barriers such as medical exams and lengthy applications.
In South Africa, Sanlam, through its digital arm Digisure, launched the country's first prepaid funeral cover product. It offers flexible three, six, or 12-month coverage options on a pay-as-you-go basis, similar to how South Africans purchase airtime, data, and electricity. Initially distributed through retail ambassadors who sell airtime and data, the product will transition to fully digital sales, enabling customers to purchase coverage online. Clients can also buy vouchers and activate them whenever coverage is needed, with the option to extend coverage as required. This solution allows individuals with irregular incomes to secure protection upfront, promoting financial inclusion across underserved communities.
The alternative distribution landscape is evolving rapidly and insurers can only realize its full potential if they are aware of the breadth of alternative distribution channels available and understand the range of approaches they can use to unlock the value of partnerships.

In the UK, Country Land and Business Association (CLA), a membership organization representing landowners, property owners, and business owners in England and Wales, partnered with broker Miller and insurer 1Edge to launch CLA Succession Insurance. The product is a targeted solution designed for farmers and rural landowners, paying out a lump sum if the donor dies within seven years of making a gift, allowing the family to meet any resulting inheritance tax liability. The policy provides tiered seven-year coverage: in year one it pays only for accidental death; in year two for accidental death plus sudden events like heart attack or stroke; and from years 3–7 it provides full life cover for death from illness, natural causes, and accidents. In the UK, gifts of land or other assets to the next generation are “potentially exempt transfers,” meaning they become fully exempt from inheritance tax (IHT) if the donor survives seven years, but can trigger a large IHT bill if the donor dies sooner.
In Malaysia, Zurich has launched two affordable protection plans, “Personal Accident Takaful” and “Term Takaful.” The products are offered through AEON Bank’s digital app for entry level, budget-conscious customers. The Personal Accident Takaful plan covers accidental death and total permanent disablement, paying a lump sum benefit, with premiums starting around RM5 per month. The Term Takaful plan provides term life coverage for death or total and permanent disability from all causes, with premiums starting at approximately RM18.
In India, Bajaj Life partnered with insurtech Inka Insurance to launch Inkapreneur, a protection solution for start-up founders and entrepreneurial professionals. The product is designed for individuals whose income is irregular or not easily documented through traditional salary proofs, addressing a segment that often struggles to qualify under standard financial underwriting criteria. Inkapreneur relaxes conventional documentation requirements so founders can gain access to life insurance protection without facing common obstacles. Distributed through Inka’s digital-first platform, the solution aims to expand life insurance access to help founders secure financial protection for their families.
