Mental health problems affect people of all age groups and from all walks of life. An ongoing effort across the insurance industry seeks to identify consumer needs, create and support programs that address the issue, and refine product offerings to better serve people with mental health challenges. To better understand wide-ranging customer needs, insurers continue to conduct mental health surveys. A few recent examples include an AIA Group (Hong Kong) mental and physical wellbeing survey, an Aflac (US) workforce report, a report by Sukoo Health (India), and a nib (New Zealand) national workplace wellbeing report. RGA has recently published its own Mental Health Survey. Many insurers also offer grants and programs to address the mental health crisis. In the US, the United Health Foundation awarded a grant of $2.5 million to The Arc of the United States to improve mental health for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The Cigna Group Foundation announced a new grant program to address youth mental health and will allocate more than $27 million to non-profit organizations over the next three years. Humana and DUOS have a new collaborative program to help improve health for veteran members in the state of Louisiana with chronic conditions. Clover Health launched a new program with Quartet Health called Clover Home Care which offers both in-home and virtual care, led by physicians and nurse practitioners, to address serious mental health issues. On the product side, insurers around the world are implementing a variety of innovative approaches.

United States Many insurers offer mental health coverage through employee assistance programs (EAPs) or via group benefit or supplemental health products. Voya Protect is an optional benefit that provides mental health coverage for conditions such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Voya Financial’s research found that 55% of working Americans believe that the employer has a responsibility to ensure their employees are mentally healthy and emotionally well. Several insurers have teamed with insurtechs and virtual providers of services. Recent partnerships include Independence Blue Cross and Teladoc Health; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Cambria Health Solutions; and The Hartford and Marvin Behavioral Health. Services offered through these alliances include 24/7 access to virtual services, coaching services, and a digital platform that offers an array of evidence-based, self-guided mental health programs and tools. Mental health services are slowly being offered to Medicare members in the US Talkspace is rolling out its service to 5 million traditional Medicare members in Florida. Representative Neal Dunn of Florida is making a push in Congress to ensure access to mental health for children on Medicaid. Canada Teachers Life and their Press Start CoLab Program is an accelerator helping young people tackle pressing social issues. The program is focused on mental health in 2024. Another example is Manulife’s support of women’s mental health and wellbeing through the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). A three-year partnership has recently been established to support the Women’s Health Research Cluster. The $1 million donation will support women’s mental health and well-being both in Canada and around the world. Beneva, an insurer, recently improved its group offering for subject matter experts, and now offers an EAP with Telus Health. It was found that 57% of Canadians prefer EAP for mental health support versus group health insurance. EAPs help reduce stigma and assist people with navigating mental health systems. Some of the innovative tools offered include Lumino Health Virtual Care powered by Dialogue, Mental Health Coach by Cloud MD, and a mental health strategy toolkit. Australia AIA Australia introduced its first program for menopausal women aged 40-55 years. The program offers rehabilitation support for mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Medibank launched a low-cost health product, Healthy Living Extra, designed especially for young Australians. It costs as little as $3.45 per week and provides 24/7 mental health phone support. United Kingdom HSBC Life increased the opportunities for mental health coverage with standard terms at the application stage with no back-office underwriting or need for personal health information. Initial tests of this approach reflect a 10% increase in receiving terms for applicants disclosing a mental illness. Seventy percent of applicants disclosing mental health issues received standard terms at the application stage. Bupa is introducing Bupa Well+, a comprehensive health and wellbeing subscription service in the UK, which offers digital solutions for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Customers with Bupa Well+ will have access to digital consultations with GPs, nurses, physios, and mental health specialists, as well as access to treatment support from mental health and physio programs. In South Africa the Vimbo App is proven to be capable of reducing the common symptoms of Depression and Anxiety, using proven Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) The insurer Discovery is now making of Vimbo at the Claims stage. Asia In the Philippines, the government is holding ongoing conversations regarding the coverage of mental health. Etiqa Insurance Singapore launched a new critical illness (CI) plan that offers comprehensive protection against more than 100 CI and mental health conditions across multiple stages of illnesses. The Essential Critical Secure Plan provides a monthly cash payout of up to 200% of the original sum insured. Singlife Dementia Cover is the first insurance plan in Singapore to offer yearly payouts for individuals living with dementia and other mental health conditions – providing financial security for individuals affected by cognitive decline. The plan pays out up to $10,000 each year for dementia and mental health conditions, such as major depressive, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders. Given their investment in research, programs, and platforms, it is evident insurers consider mental health an important issue. Their product offerings will continue to evolve as more groups of people in need of services are identified. Mental health is now regarded as one of the five pillars of health along with physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and social connections – and an important area for continued expansion of insurance coverage.

Recently, the city government of Mati and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) entered into an agreement to offer mental healthcare packages to members. The PhilHealth mental health package started in October 2023 with benefits of PHP9,000 and PHP16,000 per patient. In Thailand, driven by an increase in the number of psychiatric patients, Bangkok Insurance has joined forces with and the Department of Mental Health campaign to raise awareness about depression. With an estimated 1.5 million Thais suffering from depression, this initiative aims to educate the public. China Huize Partners with New China Life Insurance to Launch “Bliss No.2” – A Customized Lifetime Annuity Insurance Product. India Ageas Federal Life Insurance Launches Golden Years Pension Plan Featuring Bluechip Pension Fund. Microsoft, August 2024. The Golden Years Pension Plan operates as a Unit Linked Individual Pension Plan (ULIP). The plan introduces two unique features: the Early Investment Booster, and the Golden Waiver of Premium. Shriram Life Launches Deferred Annuity Plan Starting at ₹60,000 a Year. Press release, July 4, 2024. The Shriram Life Deferred Annuity Plan is an affordable annuity plan that balances long-term savings growth with insurance protection. The plan features a Return of Purchase Price, which protects the customer’s initial investment in the event of terminal illness or death. The death benefit received during deferment period is 125% of the total purchase price. United States Security Benefit Introduces TopRidge Bonus Fixed Index Annuity with 20% Premium Bonus and Free Withdrawals up to 30%. Business Wire, September 30, 2024. The TopRidge Bonus Annuity delivers a combination of a 20% premium bonus, a broad set of index crediting strategies, and a cumulative withdrawal option. It also features the Cumulative Free Withdrawal Rider with Rider Charge Refund, allowing clients to withdraw up to 30% of their total premiums without charges or penalties. American Life & Security Corp. Launches MaxGrowth: A Cutting-Edge Accumulation-Based Fixed Indexed Annuity. Business Wire. August 28, 2024. American Life & Security Corp launched American Life MaxGrowth 10 Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA). MaxGrowth enables policyholders to earn interest based on the performance of a chosen market index. The policyholder’s principal remains protected from market losses, offering policyholders peace of mind.
Hong Kong Hang Seng Insurance Introduces FortuneLife Deferred Annuity Life Insurance Plan with Enhanced Benefit to Support Stable Retirement. Press release, May 3, 2024..FortuneLife Deferred Annuity Life Insurance Plan (‘FortuneLife’), a Qualifying Deferred Annuity Policy (‘QDAP’) has been enhanced. Ibexis Life & Annuity Insurance Company Launches FIA Product Enhancements. Business Wire, April 8, 2024. Ibexis announced multiple enhancements to its FIA Plus fixed indexed annuity series. The enhancements add premium bonus option, bailout feature, and annual declared rate. The product continues to offer crediting strategies linked to two proprietary indexes from Bank of America, HSBC, and the S&P 500. Guardian Launches New Registered Index-Linked Annuity, Expanding Company’s Market Leading Retirement Annuity Business. Press release, March 27, 2024. Guardian MarketPerform, a new Registered Index-Linked Annuity designed to help individuals build their retirement assets with a level of protection. The medical insurance includes inpatient, outpatient, dental, optical, and maternity cover benefits. The life insurance pays a lump sum to the insured following death, disability, or diagnosis of a critical illness. Pakistan EFU Life & EFU General Partner with easypaisa to Introduce Transactional Insurance Combo Product. Press release. EFU Life and EFU General Partner and easypaisa have partnered to introduce a transactional insurance combo product. The introduction of transactional insurance offers an enhanced level of protection for financial transactions, surpassing traditional customer indemnity. It also features accidental death benefits ensuring comprehensive financial security for customers. Philippines FWD Life Insurance's New Product Makes Professional Mental Healthcare More Affordable and Accessible to Filipinos. Press release, September 23, 2024. The One, for mental wellbeing, is an innovative new insurance plan that helps address mental health concerns among Filipinos. It is a one-year, customizable insurance plan with life protection that addresses mental health. The plan includes coverage for accidental death and critical illnesses, including cerebral aneurysm, chronic lung disease, and cancer.
India Bharatsure Announces Insurance Products for Gig Workers, Students. Business Standard, September 6, 2024. Bharatsure has introduced four insurance products for gig workers, students, digital users, and companies seeking advanced employee benefits. The policy for gig workers provides health and personal accident coverage at a premium payment of Rs 69 monthly. The Bharatsure's Student Health Insurance provides coverage for just Rs 1 per day. The plan includes a range of medical expenses, covering over 540 day-care treatments and any form of in-patient hospitalisation. Singapore Bupa’s New Bupa Hero VHIS Plans Empower Your Health Journey. Media Outreach, August 7, 2024. The launch of the Bupa Hero VHIS Plan (Core) (Hero Core) and Bupa Hero VHIS Plan (Core Pro) (Hero Core Pro), expanding its Bupa Hero VHIS Plan portfolio, a certified Flexi Plan under the government's Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme (VHIS). The new plans provide affordable medical insurance with comprehensive and flexible coverage for individuals at various life stages. United States Prudential Financial Introduces Stop Loss Insurance. Press release, September 19, 2024. Prudential Financial, Inc., introduced a Stop Loss Insurance product aimed at helping protect companies with self-funded employee medical plans against catastrophic medical claim payouts. The Stop Loss product suite is available to employers with self-funded medical and prescription drug plans that cover at least 100 employees. Symetra Offers Stop Loss Policyholders Additional Protection with New Critical Illness Step-down Deductible Endorsement. Press release, September 10, 2024. Symetra Life Insurance Company unveiled a critical illness step-down deductible endorsement that offers self-insured employers additional protection. Groups who have Symetra Specific stop loss and offer Symetra Critical Illness Insurance ─ which includes coverage for invasive cancer ─ will receive a $5,000 reduction on their Specific deductible when there’s a qualifying cancer claim. Lincoln Financial Group Expands Compassionate Care Services to Support Beneficiaries. Press release, August 21, 2024. Group Life insurance beneficiaries will receive on-demand, personalized support through a dedicated care team. New grief support services have been launched for Group Life beneficiaries. These services are provided by Empathy, which helps people navigate the logistical aspects of loss, including estate settlement and executing a will. Sun Life U.S. Expands Health Navigator Offering to a Broader Range of Employers, Helping More Workers Access Health Care Services. Press release, July 24, 2024. Health Navigator is now available to employer clients in the medium and small group market. Members receive personalized guidance that helps them get the right medical diagnoses, providers, and treatments for their specific needs.
Australia & New Zealand Zurich Australia Launches First dedicated Women’s Health Benefit. Press release, September 19, 2024. Zurich Financial Services Australia launched the first dedicated corporate income protection benefit designed specifically to cover female health conditions and events. The Women’s Health Benefit forms part of Zurich’s refreshed Corporate Care Income Protection product and is payable to women on behalf of their employer if they experience ectopic pregnancy, HG, pre-term birth, still-birth or neonatal mortality, endometriosis, PMDD, or menopause. Medibank Launches Next-gen Corporate Health Cover. Press release, August 6, 2024. Medibank has launched a new and market-leading corporate health cover program. Its aim is to assist with everyday wellbeing. By providing a dedicated corporate health assist concierge, all customers have access to 24/7 mental health and nurse support lines as well as preventative health programs. Hong Kong AXA Launches CareForAll Hospital Cash Plan to Foster Proactive Care and Alleviate Financial Concerns Associated with Hospitalization. Press release, July 3, 2024. The launch of the new CareForAll Hospital Cash Plan includes a daily hospital cash benefit to support customers every step of the way. This plan is coupled with a relaxed underwriting process, ensuring that customers can focus on their wellbeing without added stress.
